〘Noun〙 (meaning Tang-style paper)① Paper made to imitate paper imported from China. Various colored patterns are printed on it, and some are painted with gold and silver. ※Utsubo (around 970-999) Rojojo: "A three-foot-long sheet of paper was hung on the wax ceiling for the master of the house as well." ※Essays, Teijo Miscellany (around 1784) 14: "Painting the walls, sliding doors, and paper screens of a zabuton with paper has been around since ancient times." ② Abbreviation of "karakami shoji (paper screen)." ※Shinsen Rokujo (around 1244) 5: "Even tonight, I'm busy, so I've decided to meet you, but this paper is different and I've made it myself ( Fujiwara Tomoie)." ③ Name of the color of the weave. The warp is white and the weft is yellow. ④ Name of the color of the overlapping layers . The front is white and the back is yellow. ※Matsusasuke Shozokusho (1184) 3 "Karakami, light blue, these are all white and yellow on the back"⑤ In particular, brothels and prostitutes in the Shinagawa pleasure quarters during the Edo period. In Shinagawa brothels, only two or three lower-ranking prostitutes were displayed on the wall, and the name of the shop, the prostitute, and their seal were written on the paper on the front. ※Miscellaneous haiku, Yanagi Taru-nii (1786) "When the paper is rubbed, a large Buddha appears."

〘Noun〙 A general term for paper produced in southern China. In the old days, it was made from paper mulberry bark, and was imported from the Nara period for use as paper for copying sutras. Paper imported from the Muromachi period onwards was made mainly from bamboo, and although it was fragile, it held ink well, and was often used for calligraphy and painting. High-quality paper was called Kebe, and low-quality paper was called Renshi. *Kokin Chomonshu (1254), Vol. 5: "The commentary was written on two pieces of white paper."

とう‐し タウ‥【唐紙】

〘名〙 中国南部地方産の紙の総称。古くは楮皮を原料とし、奈良時代から写経用紙などに輸入した。室町時代以降輸入されたものは竹を主原料とし、質はもろいが墨ののりがよく、書画に多く用いられた。上等品を毛辺、下等品を連史と呼ぶ。※古今著聞集(1254)五「件賛、白唐紙二枚に書たり」
