An insect that belongs to the family Acanthodidae in the order Odonata in the class Insecta. Its body length is about 37 mm, with a hind wing length of 21 mm. It is so named because it overwinters as an adult. The adults emerge during the summer and spend the winter in bushes or among trees, coming to waterside areas the following spring to lay eggs in soft plant matter just above the water's surface. It is found from Hokkaido to Kyushu, but is more prevalent in the north, and on the continent it can be found as far as central Europe. The closely related species, the narrow-legged dragonfly, has a similar life cycle, but this species is found south of Honshu and in the Ryukyu Islands, and the overwintering adults change to a beautiful light blue body color. The narrow-legged dragonfly has been observed resting on the tips of snow-covered twigs in harsh winter. [Shojiro Asahina] Distributed from Hokkaido to Kyushu. The body is light brown with bronze-colored markings, and the sexes are almost identical. Body length is about 37 mm, hind wing length is about 21 mm.
