Otsunentobo - Otsunentobo

An insect that belongs to the family Acanthodidae in the order Odonata in the class Insecta. Its body length is about 37 mm, with a hind wing length of 21 mm. It is so named because it overwinters as an adult. The adults emerge during the summer and spend the winter in bushes or among trees, coming to waterside areas the following spring to lay eggs in soft plant matter just above the water's surface. It is found from Hokkaido to Kyushu, but is more prevalent in the north, and on the continent it can be found as far as central Europe. The closely related species, the narrow-legged dragonfly, has a similar life cycle, but this species is found south of Honshu and in the Ryukyu Islands, and the overwintering adults change to a beautiful light blue body color. The narrow-legged dragonfly has been observed resting on the tips of snow-covered twigs in harsh winter.

昆虫綱トンボ目アオイトトンボ科に属する昆虫。体長約37ミリメートル、後翅長(こうしちょう)21ミリメートル。成虫のままで越冬するのでこの名がある。夏の間に羽化した成虫は叢間(そうかん)や樹間で冬を過ごし、翌春水辺にきて、水面にさしかかった柔らかい植物体中に産卵する。北海道から九州に分布するが、北方に多く、大陸では中央ヨーロッパまで分布する。近似種のホソミオツネントンボも同じような生活史をもつが、この種は本州以南、南西諸島に分布し、越冬した成虫は体色が美しい水色に変ずる。ホソミオツネントンボは、厳冬に雪をかぶった小枝の先に止まっていることが観察されている。
