…He started out as a merchant in Cologne, but around 1862 he began to aspire to produce gas engines as a prime mover for small factories to replace steam engines. In 1864 he founded the NA Otto Company with E. Langen, and in 1866 he succeeded in improving and producing a free-piston engine. This engine was an atmospheric pressure engine, consuming about one-third less gas than J. Renoir's gas engine, and won a gold medal at the Paris World's Fair in 1867. …
