After graduating from the University of Zurich, she worked as a teacher and began writing novels. She was the first woman to become a member of the Prussian Academy of Arts and the first woman to win the Goethe Prize. In her early years, she produced many romantic and lyrical works, such as Memories of the Young Rudolf Ursleu (1893), and also attempted to reevaluate German Romanticism in her famous works Blütezeit der Romantik (1999) and Ausbreitung und Verfall der Romantik (1902).
