He served the Tang Dynasty as an architect, succeeding his father Yan Pi, who served the Northern Zhou and Sui Dynasties, and his brother Yan Lide (?-656), who served Gaozu, Taizong, and Gaozong of the Tang Dynasty and was involved in the construction of Taizong's Mausoleum. He was promoted from Minister of Works to Prime Minister (668), a position he held until his death, and was posthumously named Wenzhen. However, he lacked the ability to be a prime minister to settle the political situation when Empress Wu Zetian began to gain power. …
