...The mountain has a volume of 1000 km3 , making it one of the largest volcanoes in an archipelago, and has 266 paravolcanoes. The current crater cone Piano del Lago stands at the summit, and the eastern part of the mountain has the Val del Bove, a 4 km wide rift valley originating from an explosion crater. The base is marine sediments from the Eocene to Pliocene eras, and volcanic activity began on the seafloor, but became a land volcano from the Middle Pleistocene onwards.
