COMECON - Comecon

Japanese: COMECON -
COMECON - Comecon
Council for Mutual Economic Assistance. An economic cooperation organization formed in 1949 by Eastern European countries, mainly led by the Soviet Union. It was a response to the Marshall Plan, proposed by the United States in 1947. It promoted a planned economy based on the international division of labor, and achieved results in terms of concrete economic cooperation and industrialization, such as the construction of oil pipelines connecting countries, from the 1950s onwards. However, due to the large differences in the stages of economic development between countries, which made it easy for them to become Soviet-centric, and changes in the international situation, each country tended to take its own actions, and Albania effectively withdrew in 1962. The headquarters is in Moscow. There were 10 member countries, including Cuba, Mongolia, and Vietnam, which were not Eastern European countries, but it was dissolved in September 1991 due to the decommunization of Eastern European countries and the collapse of the Soviet Union.
