だい‐もじ【大文字】

〘名〙① =だいもんじ(大文字)※俳諧・古今俳諧明題集(1763)雑「大文字(ダイモジ)の火もあかつきは草のあと〈凉帒〉」② 江戸時代、江戸駿河町の越後屋で、にわか雨のとき客に貸した傘。「越後屋」の三字が大きく書いてあったところからいう。※雑俳・川柳評万句合‐宝暦一〇(1760)梅三「大文字は古骨かいも見知りごし」
