A river port city in the northeastern part of Mindanao, Philippines. Capital of Agusan del Norte Province. Located 5 km upstream from the mouth of the Agusan River, it is a junction of the main road and has the outer port of Magallanes at its mouth. It is the commercial center of the middle and lower Agusan River plains and a major distribution center for timber shipped by river. There is also a sawmill. In the early days of Spanish rule, it is said to have traded gold, cinnamon, slaves, etc. with Borneo and Luzon. Population: 228,000 (1990 estimate).
