Kamiya Jutei

Japanese:
Kamiya Jutei
Year of birth: Year of birth and death unknown. A merchant and miner in Hakata, Chikuzen during the Warring States period. In the travel diary "Sakuhiko Osho Hatsutoshu" (Sakuhiko Osho Hatsutoshu) of Sakehiko Shura, the deputy envoy of the treasury ship in 1539, the name of Toshitada appears frequently along with that of the chief boatman Kamiya Kazukei, as well as Jirotaro, Kake, Hikohachiro, and Magohachiro, who all had the same surname, and Toshitada gave gifts to Shura and the others. On July 3, 1547, when the treasury ship arrived at Madarashima, a ship from Hakata arrived and Toshitada presented "two togo". On July 13, they presented one large togo and a tray of eggplants. The "two togo" was apparently sake from Hakata. There is a theory that Toshitada was Kazukei's son, but based on these articles, it can be inferred that the two were traders living in the same era, and that they should be considered joint investors of the same age rather than father and son. On his way to the Sagi Copper Mine in Izumo to purchase copper, Hisatada discovered the Iwami Silver Mine, and accompanied by carpenters and miners, he obtained silver chains, transported them to Chikuzen, and made a huge profit. In 1532, he returned to Iwami accompanied by blowers Sotan and Keiju from Hakata, and succeeded in blowing silver and extracting white silver. Given the nature of the family as merchant traders, it is quite conceivable that Hisatada learned silver smelting techniques from foreign techniques. <References> "Kamiya Family History Book," Izumiya Soko, Vol. 6
