[What is American cinema?]
The beginning of American film as an industry is said to be the appearance of the "story picture," that is, a film that tells a story. It began with director ES Porter's Life of an American Fireman (1902) and The Great Train Robbery (1903), but Griffith developed and perfected the technique in his subsequent works after Dolly's Adventure (1908). For example, the close-up was first used in The Great Train Robbery, but it was used purely as a sensation-generating trick to make it look like the criminal was shooting from close to the audience.
