…Prague, the capital of Czechoslovakia (now the capital of the Czech Republic), had been the center of Eastern European cinema ever since Jan Krizenecky (1868-1921) shot the first feature film (comedy) using a Cinématographe Lumière, a camera and projector he had purchased in Paris. In 1907, the first permanent cinema was built in Prague, and in 1912, director Max Urban made films such as The End of Love starring his wife and first star, Anna Sedlackova. After World War I, two young filmmakers, Karel Lamač and Gustav Machaty, boosted Czechoslovakian cinema with the star they discovered, Annie Ondra (who would later become the heroine of Hitchcock's films in England). Machaty's Spring Melodies (1933), which portrayed human desire and sexual instinct in symbolic images, was the work that brought Czechoslovakian cinema to the world's attention. The nude scenes featuring Hedy Kiesler (later invited to Hollywood and taking the name Hedy Lamarr) caused a stir and the film became a huge hit around the world. *Some of the terminology that mentions "Urban, M." is listed below.
