An evergreen shrub of the family Ilex (APG classification: Ilex family). A variety of Japanese white birch (Kurosoyogo) that is distinguished by its small overall size and shorter fruit stalks of 1 to 2 centimeters. It grows in Hokkaido and the upper temperate zone of Honshu north of the Chubu region, and is in a different habitat from Japanese white birch.
