Shuhei Mitsukuri

Japanese: 箕作秋坪 - みつくりしゅうへい
Shuhei Mitsukuri

Western scholar. Born on December 8, 1828 (January 15, new calendar) as the second son of Kikuchi Shiro, a Confucian scholar of the Tsuyama Domain. He studied under Mitsukuri Genpo, Ogata Koan, and others, and in 1850 (Kaei 3) he was adopted by Genpo and married his second daughter, Tsune (after Tsune's death, he remarried Genpo's third daughter, Chima). From 1859 (Ansei 6) he worked as an assistant professor at the Bansho Shirabesho (Institute for the Investigation of Foreign Documents). In 1861 (Bunkyu 1), he accompanied a Shogunate envoy to Europe and Russia. After the Meiji Restoration, he did not want to serve the new Meiji government, which was a former advocate of expelling foreigners, and opened a private school called Sansha Gakusha. In 1874 (Meiji 7), he founded Meirokusha with Mori Arinori and others, and soon after became its president and a member of what would later become the Tokyo Academy. He also served as the director of the Higher Normal School for a time. He passed away on December 3, 1886. His children were Kikuchi Dairoku, Mitsukuri Kakichi, and Genpachi.
