A butterfly belonging to the family Nymphalidae, order Lepidoptera, class Insecta. A species of fritillary butterfly endemic to eastern Asia, it is found in the plains and mountain grasslands of Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu in Japan. It was not particularly rare before World War II, but after the war it became extinct in many habitats and is the rarest of the large fritillary species found in Japan. It is found in the Korean Peninsula and China overseas. It resembles the closely related common species Uragin Hyou, but can be distinguished by the two-peaked silver pattern on the outer edge of the underside of the hindwings and the fact that the male has a single black scent scale stripe on the forewings. Wing span is about 70-80 mm. It emerges once a year, from late May in warm regions and mid-July in cold regions, and often comes to grassland flowers. Its larvae feed on violets and overwinter as first-instar larvae.

昆虫綱鱗翅(りんし)目タテハチョウ科に属するチョウ。アジア東部特産のヒョウモンチョウの1種で、日本では本州、四国、九州の平地から山地の草原に産し、第二次世界大戦前はとくにまれな種ではなかったが、戦後は多くの産地で絶滅し、日本産大形ヒョウモンのなかではもっとも少ない種となった。外国では朝鮮半島、中国に分布する。近縁の普通種ウラギンヒョウモンに似ているが、後ろばね裏面外縁の銀紋の形が2山形であること、雄の前ばねの黒色発香鱗条が1本であることによって区別できる。はねの開張70～80ミリメートル程度。年1回発生し、暖地では5月下旬ごろから、寒冷地では7月中旬ごろから発生、草地の草花にくるものが多い。幼虫の食草はスミレ類、1齢幼虫で越冬する。
