The Book of Hosea

One of the twelve minor prophets in the Old Testament. It is placed at the beginning. Following Amos, Hosea began his prophetic work in the Northern Kingdom of Israel around 750 BC, and continued until the kingdom was destroyed by the Assyrian Empire in 722 BC. He attributed the kingdom's downfall to God's judgment, and likened Israel's breaking of the covenant with Yahweh and worshiping the Canaanite god Baal to the tragic experience of his own wife Gomer's betrayal in his own household. However, he also prophesied the salvation that would come after God's severe judgment.

『旧約聖書』の十二小預言書の一つ。その最初に置かれている。ホセアはアモスに続いて、紀元前750年ごろから北イスラエル王国において預言活動を始め、前722年、王国がアッシリア帝国によって滅ぼされるときにまで及んだ。彼は、王国の滅亡を神の審判によるものと考え、イスラエルがヤーウェとの契約を破り、カナンの神バールを礼拝したことを、自分の家庭における妻ゴメルの背信行為という悲劇的な経験になぞらえて語った。しかし彼は、神の厳しい審判ののちに与えられる救いをも預言している。
