Propagation delay time

The time it takes for radio waves or electrical signals to pass through a transmission system. The speed at which radio waves travel in the air is approximately 300,000 km per second. For example, in satellite communications using geostationary satellites, the propagation delay time for radio waves sent from the transmitting station to be relayed and reflected by the satellite and arrive at the receiving station is approximately 240 ms to 270 ms. In a system operating synchronously, differences in the propagation times of the components can cause the system to malfunction. The propagation time of a digital gate is approximately 25 to 100 ns for a MOS type.

伝送系を電波または電気信号が通過するのに要する時間。空気中の電波の伝わる速さは，毎秒約30万kmである。例えば静止衛星を用いた衛星通信においては，送信局から出た電波が衛星で中継，反射されて受信局に到着するまでの伝搬遅延時間は，約240msから270msとなる。同期動作をしている系では，構成要素の伝搬時間の不同は系の誤動作の原因となる。ディジタルゲートの伝搬時間はMOS形で25～100ns程度である。
