A district of Katsuyama City in northern Fukui Prefecture. Formerly known as Heisenji Village. Located at the western foot of Mt. Hoonji, the place name is derived from Heisenji Temple, said to have been founded by Taicho in 717 (Yoro 1). Heisenji Temple is located in Echizen Baba, one of the bases for worshippers climbing Mt. Hakusan, and as the central shrine of Mt. Hakusan, it was said to have 48 shrines, 36 halls, and 6,000 temples at its peak in the Middle Ages. In 1574 (Tensho 2), the entire mountain was burned down in a fire caused by the Ikko Ikki uprising, and it has never been able to regain its former grandeur. Following the separation of Shinto and Buddhism in the early Meiji period, Hakusan Shrine remains at its current location. The grounds of Hakusan Shrine are designated as a national historic site.
