…During the 18th and 19th centuries, many European courts produced elaborate ceremonial keys for the Chamberlain, the heads of which were decorated with crowns, royal arms, or combination letters. The gold key was the emblem of the Lord Chamberlain of the United Kingdom.

Padlocks that have been used since ancient times include the spring bolt type and the Ward type; the former uses a key to push out a bolt that is stuck in the lock with the force of a leaf spring, while the latter uses a mechanism where only the key that passes through an obstacle inside the lock can turn once to open it.
