It is also called interfacial thermal resistance. When two different materials are in complete contact with each other, applying heat to one of them not only creates a temperature gradient within the two materials, but also creates a temperature "jump" at the interface. If the amount of heat flowing through the interface is Q , the temperature jump there is ΔT , and the area of the interface is S , then the Kapitza resistance R _K is defined as R _K = SΔT / Q. In a narrow sense, the R _K between liquid helium and a solid is also called the Kapitza resistance. In 1941, PL Kapitza was the first to report that a temperature jump occurs at the interface between superfluid helium-4 and copper. In general, the lower the temperature, the larger the R _K ( the R _K between liquid helium-3 and cesium magnesium nitrate is an exception), and it is an important factor that determines the cooling effect and the temperature reached when cooling a material at extremely low temperatures below a few tens of mK.

界面熱抵抗ともいう。異なる物質が完全に接しているとき，一方の物質に熱を加えると熱の流れが生じて2つの物質内で温度勾配が生じるだけでなく，その境界面で温度の「とび」が生じる。境界面を流れる熱量を Q ，そこでの温度のとびを ΔT ，境界面の面積を S とすると，カピッツァ抵抗 R_K は，R_K＝SΔT/Q で定義される。狭義には液体ヘリウムと固体の間の R_K をカピッツァ抵抗ともいう。 1941年 P. L.カピッツァが，超流動ヘリウム4と銅の境界面で温度のとびが生じることを初めて報告した。一般に温度が低くなるにつれて，R_K は大きくなり (液体ヘリウム3とセシウムマグネシウム硝酸塩間の R_K は例外) ，数十 mK 以下の極低温で物質を冷却するときの冷却効果や到達温度を決める重要な要因をなす。
