Wang Yuyan - Wang Yuyan

Japanese:
Wang Yuyan - Wang Yuyan

A poet from the Northern Song Dynasty in China. His courtesy name was Yuanzhi. He was from Jizhou (Shandong Province). He is said to be the son of a flour miller and was of low social standing. He passed the imperial examination and became a bureaucrat, making him an early example of a typical Song scholar-official. He died when he was the governor of Jizhou (Hubei Province). At the time, the unique poetry of the Song Dynasty had not yet been born, but he studied Du Fu for five-character poetry and Bai Juyi for seven-character poetry. Although he was said to be weak and calm, he combined intelligence and social criticism with a calm and unpretentious style, becoming a pioneer of the Song Dynasty's style of poetry. He wrote the 30 volumes of Xiao Chishu and the 7 volumes of Tongwaishu.
