Ensi (English spelling)

Ensi (English spelling)
A title given to rulers in the Sumerian city-states of ancient Mesopotamia. It is translated as prince. Formerly called Ishaq or Pateshi. In ancient times, it seems to have meant the head of the temple and secular ruler, but a trade document from Lagash at the end of the Early Dynastic period states that "Entemena is the secular Ensi, and Enentarji is the priest of the god Ningirsu." Ur-ka-gina, who aspired to political reform, and Gudea (c. 21st century BC), who left many statues, were the most famous Ensi.
