LD - Laserdisc

LD - Laserdisc
An optical disc standard for video recording that became popular in the early 1990s. Up to two hours of video and audio can be recorded on both sides of a 30cm diameter optical disc, and this is read out using a laser, hence the name. Video is recorded by modulating the transmitted video signal using the direct FM method, and audio is recorded as a digital audio signal, just like a CD.
A disc has a front and a back, and at some point in the middle of recording the disc needs to be flipped over and reinserted, but some playback devices can shine a laser on both the front and back, allowing you to play the disc without having to worry about switching from the front to the back.
Philips, a Dutch company also known for developing the CD, developed and announced it in 1977. It attracted attention in the late 1980s as a digital medium that could replace VHS video. Unlike conventional VHS video, there was no contact with the recording surface, and it was said that the video could be preserved semi-permanently.
The decline of LaserDisc accelerated in the late 1990s when cheaper, smaller DVDs became popular and Pioneer stopped producing LaserDisc players in the spring of 2009.
