Erz Rudder - Erz Rudder

Japanese:
Erz Rudder - Erz Rudder

…Many single-plate rudders are unbalanced rudders with the front end of the rudder (closer to the ship) as the axis of rotation, and such rudders require a large moment to rotate the rudder blade, but balanced rudders have a smaller moment on the rudder shaft, which has the advantage of reducing the horsepower of the steering gear. The Erz rudders are streamlined overall, but about one-third of the front is fixed and only the rear part is movable. By having the fixed part bear part of the force acting on the rudder, it is possible to reduce the horsepower of the steering gear and prevent stalling even at large steering angles. A reaction rudder is a wing-shaped fin attached to the leading edge of the rudder blade that rectifies the twist of the screw propeller wake and generates thrust from the rudder itself, thereby increasing the ship's thrust. Similarly, a rudder with an upside-down twist at the front end of the rudder post to rectify the screw propeller wake and increase propulsion efficiency is called a contra rudder. …
