Among the sulfide minerals in the broad sense, there are some that can be expressed by the general formula A _m B _n S _p (A is a metal atom such as Pb, Tl, Cu, or Ag, B is a metalloid atom such as As, Sb, or Bi, and S is sulfur). Among these, those in which a metalloid plays a similar role to S in the structure, such as arsenopyrite FeAsS, are counted as sulfide minerals in the narrow sense, but a group of minerals in which a metalloid plays a similar role to a metal and can be written in the form of a double salt are called sulfosalt minerals. Examples include arsenopyrite Ag ₃ SbS ₃ , tetrahedrite (Cu,Fe) ₁₂ Sb ₄ S ₁₃ , arsenopyrite Cu ₃ AsS ₄ , and sulphurite PbCuSbS ₃ , all of which are source minerals for the metals they contain.

広い意味の硫化鉱物の中で，一般式A_mB_nS_p(AはPb,Tl,Cu,Agなどの金属原子，BはAs,SbまたはBiの半金属原子，Sは硫黄)で表すことができるものがある。そのうち硫ヒ鉄鉱FeAsSのように半金属が構造中でSと同じような役割を演ずる場合は狭い意味の硫化鉱物に数えられるが，半金属が金属と似た役割を演じて複塩の形に書ける一群の鉱物を硫塩鉱物と称する。濃紅銀鉱Ag₃SbS₃，四面銅鉱(Cu,Fe)₁₂Sb₄S₁₃，硫ヒ銅鉱Cu₃AsS₄，車骨鉱PbCuSbS₃などがあり，いずれも含有金属の原料鉱物になる。
