〘Noun〙 An old name for Uta Garuta. Developed from the Heian period game of shell matching, in which two halves of a shell are fitted together, this game involves writing the first and second halves of a waka poem on the inside of each halve of a clam , then matching them together. Later, the shape of a shogi piece resembling a shell was used, and gold and silver foil-embossed cardboard was used. To play, the cards with the second halves are lined up in a circle, and the cards with the first halves are placed face down in the center, and players take turns turning them over, picking the cards with matching upper and lower halves, and the player with the most cards wins. Waka poems written on the shells and cardboard included those for "Ise" and "Genji", as well as original compositions. Komagata. Tsuimatsu . [Essays: Gayumanroku (1755)]

〘名〙歌ガルタの古称。貝の両片を合わせる平安時代の貝合わせが発展し、蛤(はまぐり)の両片の内側に和歌の上、下の句を書いて、それを取り合わせる遊び。のちには、貝に似た将棋の駒形で金銀箔押しの厚紙を用いた。遊びの方法は、下の句の札を円形に並べ、上の句の札は中央に伏せておいて、互いに順次めくっていき、上の句と下の句とが合ったものを取って、数多く札を取ったものを勝ちとする。貝や厚紙に書く和歌は、「伊勢」「源氏」等のもののほか、自作のものも用いた。駒形。続松(ついまつ)。〔随筆・雅遊漫録（1755）〕
