...The language of tragedy is verse, and most of it is in 12-syllable stanzas called alexandrins (originally used in the 12th-century epic poem The Story of Alexander the Great). Various rules are set for this stanza in the name of linguistic clarity and refinement (for example, the principle of hemistic stanzas, which divide 12 syllables into 6 stanzas, the prohibition on entanglement, the conventions of rhyme, etc.). In terms of dramaturgy, the 1,700 lines of verse are distributed evenly across the five acts, and the rule of three unities is paramount.
