A regional capital in the southern part of New South Wales, Australia. Also spelled Albury. Population 42,458 (2001). Facing the Murray River on the border with Victoria, it is a traditional wool distribution center and a crossing point for roads and railways between Sydney and Melbourne. There are factories producing clothing, meat processing, automobile transmissions, etc. 16 km to the east is the Hume Reservoir, used for irrigation. It is virtually united with Wodonga (population 31,010, 2001) on the opposite bank, and has been designated a regional development hub city, with a policy to attract factories being implemented.
