Many squid species have a strong phototactic ability and are quick to react to and capture moving objects. Taking advantage of this, a widely used method is to use a fishing light to attract squid and then fish them with a lure. Nowadays, there are many automatic squid fishing machines installed on the rear of large fishing boats, and they have been used in the open seas, but their origins date back 200 to 300 years. At that time, in the Hakodate area, a balance called a "yamate" was used, on both ends of which a lure was attached with a line, or a thin V-shaped bamboo stick called a "hanego" was used, with the hook attached to both ends. The hook was raised and lowered continuously in the sea, and squid that mistook it for bait were caught.

　イカ類の多くが強い走光性をもち，動くものに対して鋭敏に反応捕捉（ほそく）する性質のあることを利用して，集魚灯を使って集めこれを擬餌で釣り上げる方法が広く用いられている。現在では大型漁船の玄側に多数の自動イカ釣機を装備したものがあり，遠洋まで進出しているが，その発祥は200～300年前にさかのぼる。当時は函館地方で“山手”と呼ぶてんびんの両端に，糸で擬餌針(いかつの)をつけたものや，あるいは“はねご”と称するV字状の細竹の両先端に針をつけたものを用い，針を海中で間断なく上下し，これを餌とまちがえてつかんだイカを釣り上げた。…
