A mountain range stretching from east to west along the Bay of Biscay in the northern part of the Iberian Peninsula. It is about 480 km long. It is a folded mountain range formed by the Cenozoic Alpine orogeny, and is divided into east and west by the Besaya River lowlands southeast of Santander. The Basque Mountains in the east are about 200 km east to west and about 100 km wide, with gentle undulations, and in the south transition to the Meseta and Ebro lowlands, covered with thick Tertiary granite and sandstone. The Cantabrian Mountains in the west are 280 km east to west and 50 to 100 km wide, and are high, as represented by the Picos de Europa massif (highest peak 2,648 m) that stretches almost in the center, and have glacial landforms, dolines, and other karst landforms.

イベリア半島北部，ビスケー湾沿いに東西に連なる山脈。全長約480km。新生代のアルプス造山運動により形成された褶曲山脈で，サンタンデルの南東ベサヤ川低地を境に東西に分かれ，東部のバスク山地は東西約200km，幅約100km，起伏はゆるやかで，南でメセタ，エブロ低地に移行し，第三紀の花コウ岩および砂岩で厚くおおわれる。西部のカンタブリア山脈は，東西280km，幅50～100kmで，そのほぼ中央に連なるピコス･デ･エウロパ山塊(最高峰2648m)に代表されるように高峻で，氷河地形，ドリーネなどのカルスト地形がみられる。
