A classification of Japanese music. (1) Refers to Edo's Kato-bushi, Tokiwazu-bushi, Tomimoto-bushi, Kiyomoto-bushi, Shinnai-bushi, etc., as opposed to Gidayu-bushi of the Kamigata. It is a type of Joruri with a strong song-like quality that was transformed from the puppet theater Kojoruri to accompany Kabuki after the Kyoho era (1716-36). (2) Refers generally to Joruri that was established or developed in Edo, including Kojoruri. Kojoruri includes Satsuma-bushi, Hizen-bushi, Kinpira-bushi, Eikan-bushi, Geki-bushi, Tosa-bushi, and Handayu-bushi. Tosa-bushi is a school of Tosa Shōjō and is unrelated to Yamamoto Tosa-jō of Kyoto. (3) It can also refer to Gidayu-bushi works written by Edo composers. Some examples include Fukuuchi Onigai's "Shinrei Yaguchi Watashi," Kigami Taro's "Go Taiheiki Shiraishi Banashi," and Matsunuki Shi and Shiba Shibaso's collaborative work "Kyara (Meiboku) Sendai Hagi."
