Later, when the Nichiren sect (Hokke sect) rose to prominence with the advocacy of refuting slanderous teachings, sectarian debates in the late Middle Ages were centered on debates between the Nichiren sect and other sects. In 1338 (Engen 3, Rekio 1), there was a debate between Honganji Zonkaku and the Nichiren sect at the Shugo-yagata (guardian's residence) in Bingo; in 1501 (Bunki 1), there was a debate (Bunki 1) between the Nichiren sect and the Jodo sect held in Kyoto at the behest of Kanrei Hosokawa Masamoto; in 1536 (Tenbun 5), there was the Matsumoto Debate between a monk from Mount Hiei and a Nichiren sect follower, which led to the Tenbun-Hokke Rebellion; and around 1575 (Tensho 3), there was the Miyoshi Choshu who tried to convert the entire Awa province to the Lotus Sutra. The social impact of events such as the Nichiren and Shingon sect debates held at Osamu's command, the Azuchi debate in which Oda Nobunaga pitted Gyokunen of the Jodo sect against Nittsukou of the Nichiren sect at Jogon-in Temple under Azuchi Castle in 1579 (Tensho 7), and the Keicho debate (Edo debate) between Genyo of the Jodo sect and Nikkyo of the Nichiren sect held in front of Ieyasu in Edo Castle in 1608 (Keicho 13) had immeasurable effects. Of the above, the Ohara debate, Bunki debate, Azuchi debate, and Keicho debate are sometimes referred to as the "Four Japanese Debates on Sects."
