It is also called letter, writing card, message (shosoku/shosoko), sekiso, and sekitoku. It also has the meaning of paper that is kept at hand and used for miscellaneous tasks, but this is no longer the case. Letter is a term that came into general use in the early modern period, and the original characters were bun, sho, jo, kan, sen, kan, tō, satsu, and shin, and although there are subtle differences and similarities depending on the original meaning, combinations of these refer to the currently used word tegami.
