Campinas (English spelling)
A city in the eastern part of the state of São Paulo, in the southeastern part of Brazil. It is located on a plateau about 90 km northwest of the state capital, São Paulo, at an altitude of about 690 m. It was founded in the 18th century, and developed into the center of the coffee region when coffee cultivation was introduced to the region in the 19th century. It was later overshadowed by the rapidly developing cities of São Paulo and Santos, but with a large fertile agricultural area behind it, it is still important as a distribution center for coffee, citrus fruits, cocoa, sugar cane, etc. The city is home to the Agricultural Research Institute with a large experimental farm, the Pontifical Catholic University of Campinas (1941), and the State University of Campinas (62). Industry is also thriving, with factories for metallurgy, textiles, food processing, agricultural machinery, motors, etc. It is a transportation hub along the main road connecting São Paulo and Brasilia, where rail and roads branch off, and where Viracopos Airport, São Paulo's international airport, is located. Population: 960,801 (estimated 1990).
