…(b) Wooden Walls Wooden wall murals, which are made by lining up boards on the walls of wooden temples and painting them, appear to have been made as old as clay walls, but most of the ones that remain in Japan date from the Heian period onwards. The oldest remaining example of wooden wall murals is the Octagonal Hall of Eizan-ji Temple from the Nara period, and in the Heian period there are murals in the Golden Hall of Muroji Temple, the Five-story Pagoda of Daigoji Temple, the Phoenix Hall of Byodo-in Temple, the Great Hall of Fuki-ji Temple, and the Three-story Pagoda of Joruri-ji Temple, and in the Kamakura period there are murals in the Five-story Pagoda of Kaijusen-ji Temple, the Shakado Hall of Daiho-on-ji Temple, and the Golden Hall of Shomyoji Temple, but they were destroyed during the Muromachi period. Wooden walls are made by lining up vertical boards horizontally to form the picture, and the joints between the boards are filled with a filler. …
