The principle of justice is used to correct cases where the application of the law to a specific case would result in an unjust or unfair outcome. It is also said that "the law is the art of good and fairness." This principle gave rise to the concept of praetorship in contrast to civil law in ancient Rome and equity in contrast to common law in England.
