Carnival - Carnival (English spelling)

A festival held mainly in Roman Catholic countries among Christian countries. It is translated as Carnival. During the Lent period, which begins 40 days before Easter every year, people have the custom of abstaining from meat in memory of Christ's fast, but Carnival is an event to eat meat and have fun before Lent. It lasts for three to eight days, and its name is said to be derived from the Latin caro vale (farewell to meat) or carnem levare (to remove meat, to abstain from meat).

Carnival originated from the Roman winter solstice festival Saturnalia. In the early days of Christianity, in order to appease the Romans who had joined the new religion, Carnival recognized the agricultural festivals that were held among them, and was considered a pagan festival for Christians. Early carnivals were held from Epiphany (the 12th festival, January 6th) to Shrove Tuesday, the day before the start of Lent, but successive popes limited it to the 6th or 7th days before Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent. The Roman winter solstice festival was a festival for Saturnus (the god of agriculture) and was called the Saturnalia or the Saturnalia. This became the origin of Carnival and Christmas. When it was taken over by Christians, it started on December 25th and included both the New Year's festival and the 12th festival. This became Carnival, which was mainly outdoor revelry in southern Europe, and Christmas, which had religious significance in northern Europe.

Carnival events vary by era and country. In rural areas, it is a spring festival to pray for good harvests and good fortune, and traditional masks, costumes, and papier-mâché idols are used to scare away evil spirits, while in cities, costumes and papier-mâché idols are used in grand processions. There is also a custom of enjoying music and opera at national theaters, such as in Vienna, Austria. The world-famous carnivals are in Florence and Venice in Italy, Nice in southern France, Cologne in Germany, Basel in Switzerland, New Orleans in the United States, and Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, but Rio's carnival is known for the large number of deaths and injuries it causes every year. In honor of these events, lively events and festivals with costume processions and other events came to be called carnivals. In Japan, since the "Kamakura Carnival" was held in Kamakura in 1948 (Showa 23), events such as the "Sea Carnival" in the summer and the selection of a queen have been held.

The characteristics of carnival are most evident in medieval Europe. Carnival provides a sense of spiritual uplift and unity that is not bound by order. In works such as those by Francois Rabelais, a festive space emerges where everyday social norms and order are temporarily overturned, and various elements outside the constraints of feudalism and Christian ethics, such as costumes, excessive drinking and eating, slander, and foolish kings, are present. This festival originates from a festival held to drive away winter and welcome spring, and in incorporating a temporary overturning of order, it has something in common with rites of passage held at the change of seasons or stages of life. The state of anti-order in carnival is inherently temporary, and the original order that is reactivated by passing through carnival is restored as soon as the festival ends, but there are also cases where carnival has revealed social contradictions and escalated into riots, such as the massacre that occurred in the city of Romans in France.

キリスト教国のうち、主としてローマ・カトリックの国々で行われる祭り。謝肉祭と訳される。毎年復活祭（イースター）の40日前から始まる四旬節の期間中は、キリストの断食をしのんで肉食を絶つ習慣があるが、カーニバルは四旬節前に肉を食べて楽しく遊ぼうというための行事である。3日ないし8日間行われ、ラテン語のカロ・ウァーレcaro vale（肉よ、さらば）またはカルネム・レウァーレcarnem levare（肉を取り除く、肉食を絶つ）が語源とされる。

　カーニバルの起源はローマ時代の冬至祭Saturnaliaである。キリスト教の初期に、この新宗教に加入したローマ人を懐柔するために、彼らの間で行われていた農耕祭を認めたもので、キリスト教としては異教的な祭りであった。初期のカーニバルは、主顕祭（12日祭、1月6日）から四旬節の始まる前日の懺悔(ざんげ)火曜日までであったが、歴代教皇によって、四旬節の最初の日の聖灰水曜日の直前6日ないし7日に限るとされた。ローマの冬至祭はサトゥルヌスSaturnus（農業の神）の祭りで、農神祭あるいは収納祭といわれていた。これがカーニバルとクリスマスの起源となった。キリスト教徒によって受け継がれたときは、12月25日から始まって、新年の祭りと12日祭の両方をあわせ含んだものであった。これがヨーロッパの南国では戸外のお祭り騒ぎを主にしたカーニバルになり、北国では宗教的意義をもつクリスマスとなった。

　カーニバルの行事は時代と国々によって異なる。農山村では豊作・多幸を祈念する春の祭りで、古くから伝わる仮面・仮装や張り子の偶像が悪霊に対する威嚇を象徴したものであるのに対し、都会では仮装や張り子の偶像による行列などが盛大に行われる。オーストリアのウィーンのように、国立劇場で音楽や歌劇を楽しむ風習もある。世界的に名高いのは、イタリアのフィレンツェ、ベネチア、南フランスのニース、ドイツのケルン、スイスのバーゼル、アメリカのニュー・オーリンズ、ブラジルのリオ・デ・ジャネイロなどであるが、なかでもリオのカーニバルは、毎年おびただしい死者や負傷者が出ることでも知られている。こうした行事にちなんで、仮装行列などのあるにぎやかな催しや祭りをカーニバルとよぶようになった。日本でも1948年（昭和23）鎌倉で「鎌倉カーニバル」が行われてから、夏に「海のカーニバル」を催して女王を選出する行事などがみられる。

　カーニバルの特徴はヨーロッパ中世においてもっとも明白に現れる。秩序に縛られない精神の高揚・一体感を与えるカーニバルにおいては、フランソア・ラブレーの作品などをみると、日常の社会規範や秩序が一時的に転倒された祝祭空間が立ち現れ、仮装・暴飲暴食・悪口雑言・痴愚王など、封建制度やキリスト教倫理による束縛の枠外にあるさまざまな要素が存在していたことがわかる。この祭りは冬を追い払い春を迎えるために行われる祭りに由来するため、一時的な秩序の転倒を組み込む点で、季節や人生の段階の変わり目に行われる通過儀礼と共通点をもつ。カーニバルにおける反秩序的な状態は本来一時的なものであり、カーニバルを通過することによってふたたび活性化された本来の秩序が、祭りの終了と同時に回復されるが、フランスのロマンという都市で発生した虐殺など、カーニバルが社会の矛盾を顕在化させ暴動にまで発展した例もある。
