Kanikusa (Japanese climbing fern)

A perennial vine fern of the Crabraceae family. Its rhizomes crawl underground, and its leaves can grow up to 4 meters long, wrapping around other plants. The pinnae stop growing after only one pair of small pinnae, so the tips look like small buds. It grows in the mountains and fields of warm areas west of the Kanto region. In China, this name appears in the Honzo Gangmoku (Compendium of Materia Medica), and it was used as a diuretic and to counteract poisons such as those caused by scorpions. Its spores are used to wrap pills. This is called Kaikinsha (sea gold dust). In the East Indies, this species is also used as an antidote for poisonous snake and insect bites. In the Philippines and the Bismarck Islands, baskets and hats are woven from the leaf stalks of this species. In parts of tropical Africa, it is also used to weave fishing nets and as material for traps.
