It began when Shigetsugu, a descendant of the Kanmu-Heishi Chichibu clan, lived in Edo and called his name Edo. A powerful family in the southwestern part of Musashi Province, Shigetsugu's son Shigenaga was highly valued after joining the forces of Minamoto no Yoritomo, and Shigenaga was entrusted with commanding the Musashi provincial government office. After the fall of the Hatakeyama clan, it became the leading samurai family in Musashi Province, and its direct descendants divided their territories into various parts of Musashi Province and became independent, while Shigemochi went down to Yasuda-sho in Izumo Province as a lord of the Jokyu Shinpo estate.
