Settlers arrived there in 1946, but mountain huts and ranches were established around 1953, and it became a popular day trip destination from Hiroshima City and Yamaguchi City. The Chugoku Expressway, which opened in 1983, passes through the Kanmuri Plateau with the 2,190m-long Kanmuriyama Tunnel, and the Yoshiwa Interchange is nearby. The Kanmuriyama Mountains extend from Mt. Kanmuriyama to Mt. Asa (1,218m), 50km northeast, and are made up of mountains with small undulating peaks such as Mt. Osorakan (1,346m) and Mt. Jippo (1,319m).
