Listed Plateau - Uwabadaiichi

A hilly plateau of basalt rocks spreads across the Higashi Matsuura Peninsula in the northwest of Saga Prefecture. It is about 100 to 200 meters above sea level. The plateau spreads across the western part of Karatsu City, Higashi Matsuura County, and Genkai Town, and has poor water supply and many reservoirs. It receives little rain, even for the prefecture, and generally predominates in field crops. Although commercial crops such as watermelons, tobacco, garlic, and mandarin oranges have been introduced, as well as beef cattle breeding and dairy farming, the area has traditionally been characterized by population outflow and migrant workers. However, with the establishment of the Genkai Nuclear Power Plant in Chikazaki and the completion of the Nagoya Ohashi Bridge and the Hokazu Bridge, the transportation system has been improved, and the national and prefectural land improvement projects have also begun in earnest. Two prefectural high schools have also been established (merged in 2005), and the high school enrollment rate has increased. Fishing ports are dotted around Obore Valley at the end of the plateau, and the area is rich in historical tales of the Matsuura Navy and Nagoya Castle, as well as the scenic beauty of Genkai Quasi-National Park.
