Ulm Cathedral - Ulmer Münster

Ulm Cathedral - Ulmer Münster
Ulm Cathedral in the state of Baden-Württemberg in southwestern Germany. It has the tallest tower (161m) of any Gothic cathedral. Construction began in 1377 by Heinrich von Gmünd, first of the Parler family, as a cathedral with nave and aisles of equal height, but in 1392 the architect Ulrich von Enzinger altered the design to lower the aisles and laid the cornerstone for the west tower. The nave was completed in 1471, but the tower was redesigned by Matthias Böblinger (→Böblinger family), and construction began in 1474, with the upper part built in 1494, giving it a tentative completion. Construction of the associated details was halted in 1543 due to economic reasons caused by repeated wars, and it was damaged by iconoclastic Protestants during the height of the Reformation in the 17th century. Restoration began in 1844, when the current tall spire was built on the west tower according to Böblinger's design, and was completed in 1890. The interior of the cathedral, with a large tower on the west side of the steeply sloping roof and two towers on either side of the eastern sanctuary, has a five-aisle structure with slender columns dividing the side aisles in two. Decorated with 15th century murals, stained glass, and sculptures, it is a representative example of the German High Gothic style.
