...A branch of the Niger-Kordofan language family, it is a large language group distributed over a wide area from the western tip of West Africa through Nigeria and other places to the southern tip of the African continent. It is subdivided into six groups: West Atlantic (Fula, Wolof, etc.), Mande (Mandekan, Bai, etc.), Voltaic (also called Gur, Mossi, Senufo, etc.), Kwa (Yoruba, Igbo, etc.), Adamawa-Eastern (Sango, Zande, etc.), and Benue-Congo (Tib, Bantu, etc.).

...Mande languages have a large number of speakers, comparable to the Hausa language of West Africa and the Swahili language of East Africa. The Mande peoples in Mali include agriculturalists such as the Bambara (1.66 million), Soninke (Sarakole) (420,000), Malinke (300,000), and Khassonke, as well as Dyula traders who are engaged in trade. Among the tribes with different linguistic systems, such as the Atlantic language group and the Volta language group, the most prominent are the Fulbe (Fulani, Pool) (550,000) who live in the inland delta region formed by the Niger River in the center, the Senufo (430,000) who live in the south, the Songhai (300,000) who live in the great bend of the Niger River in the east, the Dogon (240,000) who live in the Bandiagara Mountains, the Tuareg who live in the desert in the north, and the Maure who live in the Sahel region to the south.

…マンデ系の言語は，西アフリカのハウサ語や，東アフリカのスワヒリ語に匹敵する大きな言語人口を持つ。マリ国内のマンデ諸族Mandeには，バンバラ族(166万)，ソニンケ族Soninke(サラコレ族Sarakole)(42万)，マリンケ族(30万)，カソンケ族Khassonkeなどの農耕民や，交易に従事するデュラDyula商人が含まれる。そのほか，大西洋側語群，ボルタ語群など言語系統の異なる部族のなかで有力なのは，中部のニジェール川が形成する内陸デルタ地域に居住するフルベ(フラニ，プール)族(55万)，南部に住むセヌフォ族(43万)，東部のニジェール川の大湾曲部に住むソンガイ族(30万)，バンディアガラ山地に住むドゴン族(24万)，北部の砂漠を生活の舞台とするトゥアレグ族や，その南のサヘル地帯に住むモール族Maureなどである。…
