An alliance of radical Catholics formed in France in the late 16th century at the end of the Wars of Religion (the Religious Wars). As armed conflict between the old and new factions continued, a third faction called the Politiques, centered around moderate Catholics who sought to restore peace by strengthening royal authority, formed around the king and began to show a tendency toward religious tolerance. In contrast, orthodox Catholics who advocated the eradication of heresy issued a declaration in 1576 in Peronne, northern France, and formed the League, with Henry, Duke of Guise, as its leader.

16世紀後半のフランスで，宗教戦争(ユグノー戦争)末期に結成された過激派カトリックの同盟。新旧両派の武力抗争が続く中で，国王の周辺に，王権の強化による平和の回復を目指す穏健派カトリックを中心とした第三の党派〈ポリティーク派Politiques〉が形成され，宗教的寛容の傾向を示し始めたのに対し，異端の撲滅を主張する正統派カトリックが，1576年北フランスのペロンヌにおいて宣言を発し結成した同盟で，ギーズ公アンリを首領と仰いだ。
