A school of Kusemai (dance). Kusemai began to change in the mid-15th century, and became a dance to accompany long narrative plays. There were many different schools of Kusemai, but Kōwakamai, which originated in Echizen, became the most popular. Kusemai from this period is also simply called mai, and one school of this dance was the Ogashira school, whose name occasionally appears in records after the entry for February 15, 1516, in the Goyūdono Jōnikki. Even in the early modern period, the Kōwaka and Ogashira schools are sometimes cited as schools of dance. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
