A system for organizing books and information using cards. Unlike notebooks, it has the advantage of being free to rearrange and add to certain themes, and has developed into a literature search technique. The first card catalog was made overseas in 1820 at the London Telegraph and Technical Library, and as recently as 1898 the Library of Congress in the United States decided on 3 inch x 5 inch (7.5 cm x 12.5 cm) cards as the standard catalog card. The card system was introduced to Japan around 1890 (Meiji 23). Since then, card-based organization and learning methods have gradually developed both domestically and internationally, but in Japan, standardized B6 size cards were used in a joint research project at Kyoto University's Institute for Research in Humanities in the 1950s, and the results were introduced to the public by Umesao Tadao, after which it quickly became popular.
