Japanese: ぬえ(鵼∥鵺) - ぬえ

(1) Dialect of the Brown Thrush. Also called Nui, Nue Tsugumi, Nuedori, Onitsugumi, Choman, etc., it has been considered an ominous and spooky bird since ancient times because it cries gloomily at night from around the time the snow melts to around May or June. In the first volume of the Manyoshu, it is sung, "... the unlucky thing's heart is in pain, the Nue child bird is in a daze..." and in the Tsutsumi Chunagon Monogatari, it is written, "I wonder if the Nue's cry is an abominable thing." Even today, it is said that when the Nue cries, someone will die or there will be a fire, and it is believed to be a sign of something strange.

(1)トラツグミの方言。ヌイ，ヌエツグミ，ヌエドリ，オニツグミ，チョウマンなどとも呼ばれ，雪どけころから5,6月ころに陰気な声で夜鳴くことから，古来，不吉で無気味な鳥とされてきた。《万葉集》巻一には〈……むらきもの　心を痛み　ぬえ子鳥　うらなけをれば……〉と歌われ，《堤中納言物語》にも〈ぬえの鳴きつるにやあらむ，忌むなるものを〉とある。現在もヌエが鳴くと死者が出るとか火事が出るといい，変事をつげるものとされている。
