Red-tailed macaque (Cercopithecus ascanius)

Japanese: アカオザル（英語表記）Cercopithecus ascanius

A species of primate in the Cercopithecidae family, this medium-sized Old World monkey (illustration) has a long red tail. It is widely distributed in the forests of eastern and central Africa, and is particularly prevalent in secondary forests and swamp forests. Its head and body length is about 50 cm, its weight is about 6 kg, and its tail is reddish brown and longer than its head and body length. Its back is dark brown, its chest and abdomen white, its cheeks bright blue, and it has a white heart-shaped spot on the tip of its nose. It is an arboreal dweller, but sometimes descends to the ground. Its main diet consists of fruit, leaves, buds, and flowers, and it is also known to eat insects such as ants.

霊長目オナガザル科の1種で，赤く長い尾をもつ中型の旧世界ザル（イラスト）。アフリカの東部から中央部の森林に広く分布し，とくに二次林や沼沢林に多く生息する。頭胴長約50cm，体重約6kg，尾は赤褐色で頭胴長より長い。背面は暗褐色で胸腹部は白く，ほおは鮮やかなブルーで，鼻の頭に白いハート形のスポットをもつ。　樹上生活者であるが地上に降りることもある。おもな食物は，果実，木の葉，芽，花で，アリなどの昆虫を食べることも知られている。
