...Although its popularity is said to have waned in the 1970s and 1980s, tango is recognized worldwide as the "national music" of Argentina, which conveys the hearts of the people of Buenos Aires. Representative musicians in the history of Argentine tango include singer Gardère, composer Eduardo Arolas (1892-1924), known as the "tiger of bandoneon," Enrique Santos Discépolo (1901-51), who composed "Zira Zira," and orchestra conductors Francisco Canaro, Roberto Firpo, Julio de Caro, Juan D'Arienzo, Carlos di Sarli, Aníbal Troilo, Osvaldo Pugliese, and Astor Piazzolla. Argentine tango was first introduced to Japan in the late 1920s, initially through recordings by Western performers.
