He initially pursued a career as a journalist, but was recognized for his novel, “I Am Within” (1929), which featured a man who escaped from a smuggling ring as the protagonist, and presented ethical and religious issues in a sort of thriller style, while also making full use of the techniques of modern psychological fiction. After this, he published serious novels such as “The Battlefield” (1934) and “England Made Me” (1935), as well as more thriller-like novels that Greene himself called “entertainment pieces,” such as “The Stamford Express” (1932), “Gun for Sale” (1936), “The Secret Agent” (1939), and “The Ministry of Fear” (1943), which showed a kind of scathing criticism of civilization. …
